Long time lurker but first-time poster, so please be nice :)

Just down the road is Llandegai industrial estate, home to Bangor's biggest car boot sale. I think it's probably Bangor's ONLY car boot sale, but still it's technically true.
Anyhoo, it contains a panoply of second-hand tat, furniture, collectables and truly disturbing items in a building with the approximate size (and décor) of an aircraft hangar.
I go along with the pretence of buying sensible things like cheap books and locally grown vegetables, or to entertain like-minded visitors on a rainy day, but really I hunt the (not-so-)elusive thrift-horror-beast.

I have a question for all you lovelies.

I colored my hair a dark reddish brown, and because I had some lighter regrowth it came out to be just the color I wanted on the regrowth, but a dark, dark (almost black) brown on the porous ends and the places that had already been colored. Is there any way to possibly fade the dark stuff out so that I look a little less two-toned? I really like the color on my regrowth, and I really don't want to dye it again for fear of my hair disintegrating.
Hmmmm.
What to do?

Welcome, all! This is my first post, and one of my favorite hobbies is going to thrift stores :)  I've been to this Salvation Army a few times, but this is the first time I've visited with a camera in tow. (The pictures are arranged in the order in which I took them in the store; and I warn ahead of time for some mildly off-color jokes).

Varied horrors, and one epic WIN! )

I hope to have lots of fun in this community; and to share lots more ridiculous photos in the future :)

Hi friends,
I've recently bleached the crap out of my hair leaving me with this awesome blank canvas to stuff around with, but the question is, how should i dye it next?...
I've been looking into dying my hair half-half down the middle but i can't find any examples of it (dam you google). If you have any pictures of you or your friends, or any others you're just hanging onto of hair dyed half-half down the middle it'd be super appreciated if you share them. Thanky.

Black/bleach [01/03/2010 @ 12:07pm]

Hullo
My black (Schwarzkopf Live Color XXL Cosmic Blue) is growing out, so I thought I'd re-do the roots and give the rest a layer again. Then I thought it might be quite nice to bleach a few sort of highlight areas, or streaks, or something, so that the black (which kinda shimmers blue) on those areas is more blue.

Would that actually work?
Can I dye over my current black hair? (It's been in for months and months)
If it is likely to work, what sort of bleach/brand should I use?
Any other tips appreciated. I usually go for one solid colour, thought it might make a change to do something different....

Maintenance - and some changes for 2010. [01/03/2010 @ 12:44pm]

1word1day

[nerdfury]
Howdy folks,

As many of you are aware, the 'word a day' vibe of this community has dropped down to something more akin to 'word a week or possibly two if someone remembers.' This isn't what we want as a community! We want a daily list of fresh words to inspire and learn, not a weekly word from me, and an ever degrading list of occasional posters.

As you'll also have noticed, our illustrious owner and maintainers have all but disappeared, so it's time for some decisive action!

Effective immediately I've taken maintainership of the community and removed everyone else so we can start fresh with new, daily posters. Don't panic, existing mods, maintainers and posters - you aren't banned! More on this below.

Now, this is a pretty adult community - we have relatively little issue with trolls or such. A few arrogant pratts here and there, but usually they're harmless. - but I always have to expect some concern, so here's a few pre-emptive answers to what may be asked:

Q. Is this a hostile takeover? Will there be military personnel in the streets? Will I have to learn to speak Australian to avoid raising suspicion?

A. Not by any means! There has been a lack of maintainership and postership for several months now, and I am simply taking decisive action to get the place back on track, as the prior maintainer
[info]sea_gaagii once did ages ago. With all the mods gone, and most of the posters scattered to the four winds, I'm hoping to get us back to daily posts by taking ownership of the situation.

Q. What about my existing maintainer/moderator/poster status? Am I no longer welcome? Don't you love me?

A. A lot of people no longer have a presence in the community under their roles. Those who had the roles have been removed so we can have a fresh start. If any of the people who had certain roles here comment, send me a PM or email me at shirosenshi at gmail dot com, they'll be immediately re-added if they're up for continuing to post or moderate the community! You've just been removed for now because it's easier to remove all and add those who want to continue in their roles than to keep everyone and work out who's just away on holiday or just doesn't check their email often enough.

So, my friends, there are two questions to be asked:

1. Who wants to post? I need six people, and some subs, who are willing and able to post one word per week.

2. What do you, as the readers of this community, want from this place? I've tried to expand the community's horizons a little by posting phrases (anyone remember Fin de Siecle?) and things that technically aren't real (like 'Tetris Effect' and 'Greebles'!). But does anyone else have any ideas for how we might expand the community and make it a little more exciting, and maybe easier for people to post things if they can't find a word?

All comments welcome, I look forward to your questions, queries and feedback. Please, as always, keep it polite and constructive. If you have a serious issue, please contact me privately. This is, once again, not a hostile takeover. I'm just getting things back up and running again.

Thanks all!

Bleach Kit gone Wrong -Purple/Gray Fix [01/02/2010 @ 3:24am]

dyedhair

[rachelison]
Hello there,

I found this community while searching for an at-home fix for a box bleach kit gone wrong.   I usually bleach my platinum hair from medium brown just fine but some kits have way to much purple toner (to give the blonde that ash color vs golden)  This time around I used Nutrisse extra lightening ash blonde kit.  After the proscribed 25 minutes I washed my hair out.. to find my roots carrot orange and most of my platinum hair a dark purple.

I don't have the money to go to the salon to fix it and having used an at-home hair color stripper kit before, I wasn't excited about how much damage they do to your hair.

I searched the internet and found two solutions, both of which I tried.

The first was to wash my hair several times with Dawn dish soap.  I did this three times, experimenting with different methods.  I tried continuously running hot water (to open the pores) over part of my head while scrubbing and continuing to use dawn, the other half i just left the dawn suds set.  After half an hour and 4 washed, it had lightened my hair to a lavender.

I tried the next fix, which worked REALLY well.  The recipe is to mix 3 parts lemon juice with one part deep conditioner.  The lemon juice and conditioner didnt mix in the bowl very well, mostly just broke into clumps, so I poured the concoction over my head and rubbed the conditioner in.  I next blowdryed my hair for about 5 minutes.  The recipe I found said to blow dry until almost dry, then rinse with pure lemon juice.  After 5 minutes all the purple was gone and my hair was once again white.  Since I had achieved the desired effect, I just rinsed with water.  The condition worked like, well condition and my hair was left fairly soft considering what I had just done to it.  It was a little fragile while wet- so be careful not to yank on it in any way.

The lemon juice solution was said to help tone down any hair color that you think is too dark- the lady who wrote the article I read was using it to lighten a dark brown color.

As a side note, I snipped off a tiny bit bit of hair to test a dye-over theory while I was attempting the dawn/lemon juice fix.  I took a semi-permanant dye in dark blonde with golden undertones to see what would happen if I needed to dye over it.  I knew anything with a cool/ash tone would just dye my hair darker purple, so I tried a golden tone.  As expected, it turned the hair a soupy green.  Glad I didnt have to go that route!

Hope this help some of you who've messed up in the same way as me!

Another quick question- for all you boxed- platinum blondes out there like me, What brand of dye do you like best to lighten hair that is medium brown and wont dye your existing blonde funky colors, and doenst destroy your hair?  I know there and good ones and bad ones out there (and yes, I know getting my hair professionally done is the best solution, but I just cant afford to go to a salon ever 4-6 weeks!)

Another question, for anyone who might know- What dye/procedure would you recommend to take my hair a couple shades darker blonde?  Dyeing over platinum blonde is really hard to do when you take the roots into account.  Its super hard to dye over platinum without ending up with strange overly dark colors or purple orange or green tones- and how do you account for new growth?  Any help or suggestions is much appreciated.

Does anyone know what's going on with [info]dyed_hair? earlier today, a well-known troll in the community was suddenly the sole moderator and made this post, and not long ago this one. From what I can understand, she's planning to turn the comm into a porn site for people with dyed hair. The old mod has made no goodbye or explanation posts, and as of now, all comments on the new mod posts are screened. I've commented to them voicing my concerns, but she has as of now yet to unscreen them.

So basically ... does anyone know what the fuck's going on?

ETA: nvm this, things got cleared up! apparently it was seized through some weird loophole, but things are back to normal now.
